When I heard Ms Kangana Ranaut (famous for, among other things, sending legal notices) calling my friend Urmila Matondkar a ‘softporn actress’ the first person I called to share my anger was Ram Gopal Varma.

After all, it was Ramu whose Rangeela gave Urmila her superstardom. They went on to do really interesting work together. Also,it is to be noted that once Urmila exited from Ramu’s cinema,a horrible decline set into a career. It was akin to what happened to O P Nayyar’s career after Asha Bhosle stopped singing for him.

It was Ramu who introduced me to Urmila. I remember how warmly she met me for the first time, as if we knew each other for a long time.

Cut to Urmila being insulted by Ms Ranaut and Ramu’s coy response: “I don’t think it’s right for me to comment now.”

Huh?

This is the same man who has a sharp vitriolic opinion on everybody from Pawan Kalyan and Arnab Goswami. Ramu, why the silence on someone who played such a big hand in your career? It is this cowardice that is going to be the death of the Hindi film industry, as we know it.What is everyone afraid of?

Ramu agreed that staying silent is not an option in today’s day and age of social media. And yet he chose silence on Urmila.

Sad, Ramu, very sad.
