On July 26, producers Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Jio Studios and Netflix were in a for a shock. Their big July 30 release of the Kriti Sanon-Pankaj Tripathi rom-com Mimi was out on an app on July 26, four days in advance of the scheduled release date.
Without wasting time Vijan decided to release the film on the evening of July 26 rather than wait for July 30.
The official reason given for the preponed release was Kriti Sanon’s birthday.
Which is a very difficult explanation to swallow.
Says an actor from Mimi, “We were as surprised by the decision(to prepone) as everyone else. This was quick damage control after our film was pirated. I don’t think the decision had anything to do with Kriti’s birthday. If that was actually the reason for the preponed release then Netflix and Maddock would have planned it for her birthday from the start. Besides her birthday is on July 27, and they had to rush-release on July 26.”
Apparently Netflix was none too happy with Maddock’s hasty revision of the release date.
