The outcome of the Pongal box office battle between Thala Ajith and Thalapathy Vijay is all but decided. While Vijay’s family drama Varisu is slipping into the below-average category due to its predictable emotions, Ajith’s Thunivu Movie, directed by H Vinoth Kumar, is making money despite having questionable content thanks to its slick visuals and Hollywood-style narration that are enticing the Tamil audience.

In three days, Thunivu has surpassed the coveted Rs 50 crore mark in Tamil Nadu, according to film industry tracker Manobala Vijayabalan, while Varisu has made Rs 35 crore in the same amount of time.

Manobala Vijayabalan Tweet On Varisu And Thunivu Movies

According to Vijayabalan, Thunivu has already made $100 million worldwide. He compared KGF 2 to Beast, two films that battled last year and saw the high-octane Yash-starrer triumph. Vijay’s film Beast blanked out in front of KGF 2. Read Vijayabalan’s tweet, “Similar to #Beast vs #KGF2, where #Yash thrashed the opponent. Now #AjithKumar is doing the same to #Vijay for the three consecutive days. Despite the agenda group’s full-time efforts to fail #Thunivu, the movie has BEATEN #Varisu to emerge as the REAL Pongal winner at the BO.”

The Telugu dubbed version of Thunivu’s film Thegimpu is performing well outside of Karnataka, while Varisu’s Telugu dubbed version Vaarasudu appears to be doing better overall.

India Today’s Reviews On Both Movies

According to India Today’s review of Thunivu movie, “Director H Vinoth’s Thunivu, starring Ajith Kumar, Manju Warrier, and John Kokken, is a bank heist thriller with an interesting plot at its core. With a fair share of flaws in the screenplay, Thunivu ends up as a decent flick.”

“Though the film is reminiscent of some Telugu films, Vijay keeps us engaged with his comedy and action,” India Today’s review of Varisu movie.

Another trade expert, Ramesh Bala, claimed that Thunivu, the first Ajith Kumar film to achieve this coveted milestone, broke the $600,000 threshold in North America in just three days.
