Every year, veteran actor Kharaj Mukherjee meticulously prepares for Kali Puja, upholding a legacy that has been an integral part of his family for over 50 years. This year is no exception, despite his busy schedule.
A Historical Legacy:
In a significant moment of cultural preservation, Mukherjee’s father initiated the tradition by bringing a Sara (a wooden base) from Krishnanagar adorned with a painted goddess figure. Over time, Sara underwent repairs courtesy of Kharaj’s grandfather, who enlisted the expertise of artisans from Krishnanagar. Today, the revered Sara rests in a carefully preserved box, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Mukhopadhyay family.
Personal Touch:
With a personal touch that adds warmth to the tradition, Mukherjee selects flowers and garlands for the goddess at the Howrah flower market. He will bring the idol home earlier this year due to his commitments, including a film shoot with Milan Bhowmik and an event on October 30. His wife, residing in their village house in Birbhum’s Pathai area, oversees the necessary renovations, adding her touch to the preparations.
Family Involvement:
Although enthusiastic about the puja, Mukherjee’s son is still determining whether to attend due to his residence in Mumbai. Kharaj’s elder brother ensures the smooth execution of the puja rituals. The actor, an accomplished cook, previously prepared the puja offerings but now relies on a local caterer due to time constraints.
Traditional Delights:
The puja feast, a culmination of the family’s devotion, features khichuri, five types of fried food, sweets, and meat dishes accompanied by fried rice. These dishes are prepared with meticulous care and love. Friends and family gather to partake in the festivities, which include music and chanting, adding to the joyous atmosphere.
Dadhikarma:
The following day, the family organizes Dadhikarma, a ritual marking the conclusion of the puja. As they bid farewell to the goddess, Kharaj and his family eagerly await another year of devotion, a testament to the continuity and anticipation that underpins the Mukhopadhyay family’s Kali Puja tradition.
