In a show of support for the arts and a nod to history, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended a special screening of Kangana Ranaut‘s highly anticipated political drama ‘Emergency’ a day before its official release. The event, held in Mumbai, saw the CM joined by Kangana Ranaut, who has not only written-directed and produced the film but also plays the lead role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Talking about the film and Kangana Ranaut CM Devendra Fadnavis said, “Kangana has portrayed the late Indira Gandhi’s character in a truly remarkable manner. The Emergency remains a dark chapter in Indian history, and Kangana has brought it to life with exceptional brilliance. Congratulations to her for delivering such a powerful and impactful film. Not only does the film depict this dark chapter, but it also brilliantly showcases the 1971 war and the life journey of Indira Gandhi. It highlights a part of history that every youth should know and has been presented very rightly in the film.”
Emergency resurrects the controversial period of 1975-77 when Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across India, curbing civil liberties and altering the democratic fabric of the nation. The film promises to be a poignant reminder of the past, offering insights into one of the most tumultuous chapters in Indian history. In today’s context, with discussions around democracy and freedom taking center stage globally, Emergency highlights the the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions.
The film features a stellar cast, each portraying pivotal historical figures – Anupam Kher embodies Jayaprakash Narayan, the leader of the opposition, while Shreyas Talpade takes on the role of a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Milind Soman portrays Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Chaudhary plays Pupul Jayakar, Indira Gandhi’s confidante and Vishak Nair brings to life Sanjay Gandhi. The late Satish Kaushik’s portrayal of Jagjivan Ram marks his final on-screen performance, adding a layer of gravitas to the film.
Produced by Zee Studios, Manikarnika Films, and Renu Pitti, Emergency promises to be a cinematic spectacle. With music by Sanchit Balhara and G.V. Prakash Kumar, and dialogues penned by the acclaimed Ritesh Shah, the film is set to hit the theaters on 17th January 2025.
