The majority of the Bollywood films that we have observed growing up are about how the guy always gets the girl, the good always wins over the evil, and love wins overall.

Life doesn’t work just like happy endings and some films leave one with a heavy heart when they end. Even worse is when a terrible conclusion spoils your day when you are emotionally immersed in the film.

Have you ever sobbed while watching the credits roll? Or perhaps a chillingly ominous conclusion that stayed stuck in your mind for days or perhaps weeks? Even though they had terrible endings and were dismal, those Bollywood films managed to stick with us.

1. Badlapur (2015)

One of the few movies that make us realize that the world is filled with evil and that life is not all unicorns and rainbows. A straightforward family man named Raghu has had his world turned upside down because his wife and child were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

2. Tere Naam (2003)

It was a period when not every Salman Khan film was a dud. We were given a terrible love tale in Tere Naam, with an unfathomable resolution.

If there was anything more unsettling than Radhey’s hairdo, it was the heartbreaking conclusion where he learns that his beloved Nirjara murdered herself and he deliberately checks himself into the mental hospital because there was nothing else for him to fight for.

3. Anjali (1990)

We spent many sleepless nights as kids after viewing this Telugu film by the great director Mani Ratnam in the 1990s.

Anjali, a unique kid, was born apart from her family and subsequently suffered bullying and hatred once she reunited with them.

4. Rang De Basanti (2006)

All viewers prayed fervently until the very end for the group to escape the building without incident.

None of them did, and their only transgression was rebelling against the establishment on behalf of a friend.

5. Dhadak (2018)

Ishaqzaade, Ram-Leela, and even the original Sairat, a film about honor killing, are just a few examples of films that depict the terrible demise of two people in love.

The fact that they even slaughtered the infant makes the ending of Dhadak more horrific. Yes, they were free to not treat the child in that manner.
