Sharmila Tagore is one of India’s most well-known painters. She has a long list of outstanding performances in Hindi films to her credit.
Waqt (1965)
Waqt is one of Tagore’s most commercially successful films. For the whole principal cast, including director Yash Chopra, producer B R Chopra, and actors Balraj Sahni, Sunil Dutt, Saadhana, Raaj Kumar, and Shashi Kapoor, it is a watershed moment. Renu, portrayed by Tagore, is in love with Vijay, who is played by Shashi Kapoor. Five Filmfare Awards were given to the film, including Best Director.
Satyakam (1969)
This Hrishikesh Mukherjee film is set in the pre-independence era and is a social drama. Tagore was hailed for her performance as the major female protagonist opposing Dharmendra’s role. Satyakam won the National Award for Best Hindi Film and the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogues after that.
Aradhana (1969)
During the 1960s and 1970s, Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna were a popular couple. Aradhana was one of the pair’s critically praised and financially successful films. Tagore portrayed a pregnant lady who is abandoned by her in-laws since her marriage to her boyfriend was not legally recognised. Tagore’s performance in this film is widely regarded as one of the greatest of her career.
She was named Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards. Aradhana was also named Best Male Playback Singer and Best Film at the Filmfare Awards (Kishore Kumar).
Mausam (1975)
Tagore’s dual performance as Chanda Thapa and her daughter Kajli is praised. She was well-deserving of the National Award for Best Actress. In addition, the film was nominated for a National Award for Second Best Feature Film. Mausam was also nominated for Best Film and Best Director at the Filmfare Awards (Gulzar).
Prem Amar (1972)
The famous Rajesh Khanna line “Pushpa, I loathe tears” is based on Sharmila Tagore’s role in this film. She portrayed Pushpa, a lady who is ejected from her home by her husband when he marries another woman. Pushpa is later sold to a brothel, where she falls in love with Anand (Rajesh Khanna), a married man. Best Screenplay, Best Dialogues, and Best Sound Design were all awarded to Amar Prem at the Filmfare Awards.
