Friends’ characters’ love lives have long held viewers’ attention, but what was happening behind the scenes is just as fascinating. Friends cast members have spoken publicly about some of their underlying love ambitions in the years since the show ended in 2004, despite the fact that they have never dated. Notably, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer admitted in 2021 that they had a mutual crush on each other in real life. More recently, Matthew Perry told Diane Sawyer that he was drawn to the three female Friends actors Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow.
Perry had already made a move on Aniston and received her rejection before the group had even begun to collaborate. Sawyer mentioned how the actor “chain-crushed” them during their Oct. So, how can you not be smitten with Jenny? Courtney, too? Also Lisa? Perry questioned her.
At least with Aniston, the secret was long out. According to Entertainment Weekly, he said in his book that they had become friends approximately three years before they began working on Friends together. She “seemed intrigued, too,” and he was “quickly smitten by her.” He believed he had “made her think [he] liked her too much” after he contacted her to express his excitement over two jobs he had secured and to invite her out. When she subsequently expressed a desire to become friends, he responded, “We can’t be friends!”
The irony, of course, is that despite his struggles with alcohol and prescription drug addiction during filming, they did finally become friends, and She was the one that reached the most to him. It was nevertheless occasionally uncomfortable. According to Page Six, he stated, “Fairly early in the making of Friends I discovered that I was still badly in love with Jennifer Aniston.” “Our greetings and farewells were unpleasant.”
It’s not a coincidence if this seems like it could have been a Chandler storyline. In a meeting with the show’s creators early on, Perry revealed to Sawyer that he admitted relationships were difficult for him.
Despite some enjoyable trips down Friends memory lane in his memoir and Sawyer interview, Perry’s main goal is to share his struggle with addiction. He stated in an interview with GQ that he wants to dispel myths about alcoholism and addiction. It is impossible to distinguish between the really wealthy and the one who resides in a rent-controlled apartment, he claimed. It is indifferent. It simply goes to whoever has the gene at random. That’s the message I want to spread.
