From his debut television appearance in 1943 to the most recent Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, Batman has featured in a plethora of live-action films and TV series over the years. Here’s a look at every actor who has ever played the live-action Batman, from camp to gothic.
Lewis Wilson: The first actor to play Batman was Lewis Wilson. Columbia Pictures issued a 15-chapter serial with the same name in 1943. While Wilson portrayed Batman, Douglas Croft portrayed his sidekick Robin.
Robert Lowery: Following the popularity of 1943’s Batman, a sequel named Batman and Robin was launched in 1949. It, too, was a 15-chapter serial, as did its predecessor. Robert Lowery played Batman in this sequel, while Johnny Duncan played Robin.
Adam West: 1966 saw the premiere of both Batman the TV programme and Batman: The Movie. Surprisingly, both the film and the serial starred Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin.
Michael Keaton: When the Batman franchise transitioned from a campy to a more gothic aesthetic in 1989, Michael Keaton was cast as Batman, while Jack Nicholson portrayed the Joker. Keaton reprised his role as Batman in the 1992 film Batman Returns.
George Clooney: In the 1997 film Batman & Robin, Clooney played Batman with Chris O’Donnell as his ally Robin. Both reviewers and audiences gave the film largely poor reviews.
Christian Bale: Following the failure of Batman & Robin, the franchise resurrected itself with Batman Begins in 2005. Christopher Nolan directed the film, which starred Christian Bale as Batman. The pair collaborated on two additional Batman films, The Dark Knight, which was released in 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises, which was released in 2012.
