The Hindi film industry has given us some meticulously crafted masterpieces that went on to entertain the global audience and will remain favourites for years to come. India’s journey with the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, began with the official nomination of Mehboob Khan’s film “Mother India” in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Salaam Bombay!: This critically acclaimed movie was rewarded with a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category in 1989. Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Mira Nair in collaboration with Sooni Taraporevala, the film gives you a deep insight into the world of drugs, prostitution and child labour in the slums of India.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India: This fiction period drama was critically and commercially acclaimed. The Aamir Khan-starrer follows a small group of village folk, who challenge a newly imposed land tax by competing against British rulers in a cricket championship. It was nominated under the Best Foreign Language Film Category.

Gully Boy: Zoya Akhtar’s film was selected as India’s official entry to the 92nd Oscars. The film stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles and the story of a rapper from the streets of Mumbai who dreamt of making it big in the world of music.

The White Tiger: This 2021 drama film, written and directed by Ramin Bahrani, stars Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra (co-producer), and Rajkummar Rao. The movie, a commentary on classism and casteism in India, follows the protagonist Balram Halwai (Gourav) on his escape from poverty to become a successful entrepreneur in modern-day India. This year, The White Tiger has been nominated under the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
