Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi is coming soon, and actor Shantanu Maheshwari talks about landing the project, getting matched opposite Alia, and cooperating with SLB in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla. He says he received a call from casting director Shruti Mahajan inviting him to audition for the next biographical drama. “I had a great time going through the audition process,” Shantanu says. “Though I never thought I would get selected,” he continues (laughs). “You just don’t think like that; it’s preferable to be pessimistic.
That was my mental process during the auditions: just keep giving it your all, But I was chosen for another round of auditions, after which I was chosen for a look test, and that’s how it all went down.” Is he aware of his initial meeting with Sanjay Leela Bhansali? “I certainly do.” “I wasn’t planning on meeting him because I was preoccupied with another project, and the timing was inconvenient. I received a call (informing) me that “Sir wishes to meet you” at the last minute. So I was about to say no, that I wouldn’t be able to attend.
But my friends were like, ‘Are you crazy?’ and forced me to meet him, saying, ‘Make sure you take time out of your schedule to meet him.’ Tell them you’ll be available for two hours, and then you can meet and come back.’ That’s what I did, and I’m so glad my buddies forced me to do it because it was the best thing I could have done.”
