Since their breakup in 2019, people have been curious as to why Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth divorced. Cyrus recently disclosed her struggles with sobriety, prompting some to speculate that substance misuse had a role in her divorce. The 28-year-old pop diva, though, asserted in a new interview that alcohol was not a fault. For an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday, December 2, the “Midnight Sky” singer spoke up about her work and love life.
Cyrus, who had just released her seventh studio album Plastic Hearts the week before, told Howard Stern that she and Hemsworth’s 10-year romance ended because “there was too much strife” and that their divorce in 2019 had nothing to do with her recovery. “I want to be grounded by someone when I get home,” she explained. “I’m not a big fan of drama or fighting.” Cyrus and Hemsworth married in 2018 but announced their divorce in 2019. The couple had their ups and downs, including a near-death encounter in late 2018 when wildfires in California destroyed their Malibu home.
Cyrus and the 30-year-old Hunger Games star “lost everything,” according to Stern. Cyrus responded to reports regarding what precipitated her split with Hemsworth in September 2020. On an edition of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, she revealed, “I recently went through a very public divorce that f—ing sucked.” “What was really bad about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone I cared about realized we didn’t love one another like we used to. That’s OK. That’s fine with me.”
