The Bangtan Boys, also known as BTS, is a South Korean boy band that was created in 2010 and made its debut in 2013. Members of the septet include Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. The septet co-writes and co-produces a lot of their own music. Originally a hip-hop group, they have since expanded their musical style to include a variety of genres. Their lyrics frequently touch on mental health, adolescence’s challenges, loss, the path to self-love, and individualism.

The relevance of BTS representing South Korean culture abroad was discussed on the internet a few months ago, but as we all know, South Koreans are required to serve in the military.

According to a recent survey on popular opinion in South Korea, 60.9% of people support changing the rule on required military service so that celebrities like the members of the well-known K-pop band BTS might avoid being conscripted. Given calls for a change in the law from both ruling and opposition legislators on the committee, the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly commissioned the study, which was conducted by the South Korean polling firm Realmeter.

Elite athletes and winners of creative competitions are currently exempt from the law’s requirement that all eligible males serve in the military. The survey, which was conducted last Wednesday and Thursday among 1,000 people nationwide, revealed that 34.3% of South Koreans are opposed to amending the legislation. On August 31, Defense Minister Lee Jong Seop stated in a National Assembly session that he would think about conducting a survey to inform policy. The Defense Ministry announced the following day that it would not be carrying out the survey.
