A.R. Rahman, a well-known composer, recently made an appearance in New York City for the film “Jai Ho’s” premiere, which examines the life and career of one of India’s most beloved musicians. Rahman’s personal narrative is a significant source of inspiration. It includes founding a music studio in his backyard in the 1980s and winning the Academy Award for best soundtrack for “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2008.
Let’s review some of his best past creations in recognition of his boundless talents.
“Chotti Si Aasha” from “Roja”
Rahman, the composer who would change the face of contemporary Indian music, was first introduced to the world in Mani Ratnam’s smash hit 1992 movie “Roja.” When it was first released, this soundtrack received a lot of praise, and Time Magazine named it one of the top ten soundtracks of all time in 2005.
“Rangeela Re” (Rangeela)
The 1995 soundtrack for the movie “Rangeela” saw the comeback of legendary singer Asha Bhosle after a long period of retirement. Even today, “Rangeela Re” is a well-known Bollywood song.
Dil Se’s “Chaiyya Chaiyya”
In this 1998 romantic thriller, Rahman’s musical prowess was combined with Ratnam’s filmmaking brilliance. With the help of choreographer Farah Khan’s masterfully timed train dance, the track “Chaiyya Chaiyya” received praise for both music and dancing. The soulful melodies earned Rahman yet another Filmfare Award for Best Musical Director.
From “Taal,” “Ishq Bina”
In 1999, director Subhash Ghai and composer Rahman worked together on this love drama for the first time. The CD won nearly all music awards available in 1999, except for the National Award for Music Direction, given to Ismail Darbar for “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” which most critics agree was the music that gave the film its unique identity.
From “Thakshak,” “Rang De”
The tremendously well-liked “Taal” songs largely overshadowed the music for this 1999 action-drama movie. However, the “Thakshak” album contained a number of noteworthy songs, including “Rang De,” which was included in the 2008 Hollywood film “The Accidental Husband.”
From the movie “Rang De Basanti”
Only the range of Rahman’s musical creations for the movie came close to matching the ensemble cast of this drama from 2006. With songs like the sultry “Khoon Chala” and “Tu Bin Bataye” and the lively “Rang De Basanti” and “Roobaroo,” this fantastic soundtrack has something for everyone. It’s interesting to note that the “Rang De Basanti” theme tune was played at the Chhatrapati Shivaji train station on November 11 in honor of those who perished in the Mumbai attacks.
“Kaise Mujhe” from “Ghajini”
There were some significant Bollywood-influenced plot changes in “Kaise Mujhe” from “Ghajini,” India’s 2008 spoof of the Hollywood film “Memento,” as well as another gorgeous Rahman soundtrack. All Rahman aficionados will be impressed by his lyrical and melodic prowess throughout the entire “Ghajini” soundtrack, but they won’t be surprised.
Slumdog Millionaire’s “Jai Ho”
Any list of Rahman’s songs must contain the song whose title was the inspiration for his biographical movie. The popular song from 2008 won Rahman the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
From “Raanjhanaa,” “Tum Tak”
Most viewers would certainly concur that one of this 2013 romance drama’s few redeeming qualities was Rahman’s score. Thanks to Javed Ali’s soulful vocals and Rahman’s superb composition, “Tum Tak” stands out as yet another flawless melody.
