What is the plot of Snowdrop?

Snowdrop is set in 1987 in South Korea, a watershed moment in the country’s history when demonstrators pushed an authoritarian government to hold democratic elections and eventually implement constitutional amendments during the June 29 Declaration.

A doctoral student (played by Jung Hae-in) seeks refuge in a female dormitory at the Hosoo Women’s University after being attacked at a protest, where he meets a woman (played by Jisoo) who helps him hide. During a period of turmoil in the country, the two establish a romantic relationship.

What is the controversy surrounding Snowdrop?

In March 2021, information reportedly about the show’s premise and characters surfaced online, igniting the Snowdrop dispute.

According to the reported show synopsis and character information, Snowdrop’s male protagonist – who would be romantically tied to Jisoo’s character – would be a North Korean agent who infiltrated the democracy movement in South Korea.

Another figure would be a member of the totalitarian Agency for National Security Planning, who was described as “straightforward and just” (NSP). The National Security Project, often known as the NSP, has a lengthy history of being used to assassinate political opponents and pro-democracy activists.

Jisoo’s character was also said to be named Young-Cho, which netizens noted was similar to Chun Young-cho, a real-life historical figure who took part in South Korea’s democratic struggle in the 1980s.

Netizens accused JTBC of glorifying the NSP and criticizing South Korea’s democracy movement based on these alleged narratives and character elements. A protest vehicle was brought to JTBC’s building in Seoul on March 30, according to The Straits Times.
