AR Rahman, the Oscar-winning composer, reflected on his time writing music for Rajinikanth films, recalling how it wasn’t always a pleasant experience. Working on such flicks, Rahman stated in a new interview on the ‘Our Stupid Reactions’ YouTube channel, was “hell” because of the tight deadlines and high pressure.

Rahman admitted that he, like any other musician, has creative blockages, but he believes the greater issue is the pressure. “At least today it’s better, but it used to be that we started in March when I was doing Rajinikanth movies… They would say that this film must be out by Diwali. Then I’ll have to do the tunes, and I’ll have to do the backdrop, and the power at my apartment used to be a little wonky. We used to have two generators on standby. It was a living horror.”

Rahman, a music composer, stated he used to work on many projects with various directors at the same time. However, he had to put Rajinikanth films ahead of other projects. This occasionally resulted in directors being irritated and unhappy with Rahman. “I used to do three movies,” he said, “so the other directors would remark, ‘My thing is coming on Diwali as well, AR.’ It was horrible. I used to despise all of these celebrations, whether it was Diwali, New Year, or Pongal since I never seemed to like them. There’s a lot more free time now.”
