Cardi B was reared in The Bronx, New York City, New York, and was born Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar on October 11, 1992, in Manhattan, New York City, New York. Following the success of several of her Instagram and Vine posts and videos, she rose to internet fame. She participated as a regular cast member from 2015 to 2017 in the VH1 reality television program Love and Hip Hop: New York (2010), which showed her pursuing her musical goals. Before joining the label Atlantic Records in early 2017, she released two mixtapes, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

Invasion of Privacy, her 2018 debut studio album, premiered at number one on the Billboard 200, broke numerous streaming records, received a triple platinum certification from the RIAA, and was recognized by Billboard as the best female rap album of the 2010s. It was widely praised and went on to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album, making Cardi the first female rap artist to be nominated for Album of the Year in 15 years and the only woman to win the award as a solo artist.
Bodak Yellow and I Like It, which made her the first female rapper to have multiple number-one singles on the list, respectively, made her the second female rapper to top the chart with a solo effort after Lauryn Hill in 1998. She became the only female rapper to top the Hot 100 three times thanks to her Maroon 5 collaboration, Girls Like You. WAP, the lead single from her second album, established her as the first female rap artist to earn chart-topping songs in two decades and extended her record as the female rapper with the most Hot 100 number-one singles with her fourth leader (2010s and 2020s).
