A Bengali by heart, born to a Sikh father and a Bengali mother, Arijit commenced his music career at home. He got his training from his maternal aunt in classical. His maternal side of the family is totally involved in music. His grandmother used to sing, his uncle played a musical instrument and his mother used to play the tabla. So his growing up years was surrounded with music. No doubt, that’s where the actual talent comes from. We could say music is in his bloodstream.
Even at school and college, he was more inclined towards music than studies and so he thought of pursuing singing. He was trained under three gems, one taught him Indian Classical Music, Rajendra Prasad Hazari; he learned the tabla from Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, and Birendra Prasad taught him Rabindra Sangeet (songs that are written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore).
This was at the age of three when he was trained under the Hazari Brothers. Later, at the age of nine, he received a scholarship from the government for training in Indian Classical Music. He participated in a reality show, 10 ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, and won it. He invested the prize money to build a studio of his own and started freelancing for many music composers. He made his Bollywood debut with Phir Mohabbat, for the movie Murder 2.
