Social media has the power to alter our lives. It enables us to effortlessly communicate with friends and family while also sharing our lives on a worldwide scale. And for some, it has paved the way for celebrities. With YouTube stars like Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes gaining their big breaks online, an increasing number of superstars are turning to social media to express their ability and get found. Here’s a look at celebrities that got their start on social media.

Shawn Mendes began filming six-second Vine videos of cover tunes. Although six seconds isn’t much time to show off your skills, Mendes figured out how to make it work for him, and his number of followers quickly grew. According to Billboard, by the time he had 300,000 followers, various record labels were reaching out to the then-15-year-old, including Island Records, Atlantic Records, Sony Records, and Warner Bros. Mendes has since released three studio albums and performed at this year’s Grammy Awards. He also performed alongside his current girlfriend, Camila Cabello, during this year’s VMAs.

Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, garnered attention after unexpectedly uploading three songs on YouTube under the alias “xoxxxoooxo.” Drake, among others, was drawn to his sweet voice and the mystery surrounding his YouTube channel, and the rest is history. The Weeknd has been in and out of a romance with supermodel Bella Hadid and was recently seen leaving her New York City birthday party in early October.

Kelly went to social media with covers and original songs on MySpace and YouTube after struggling for more than ten years to establish her music career. She even tried out for the ninth season of “American Idol,” but didn’t make it past the top 24. Scooter Braun spotted her singing on YouTube and attended one of her gigs in 2013, which was her big break. The Grammy-nominated performer has already released three studio albums and will shortly go on a tour in honor of her most recent release, “Inspired by True Events.”
