Ranina, when was the first time you realized that singing will be a career for you?
At the age of 3, I casually used to sing ‘bhajans’ with mom. Both my mom and dad are very good singers. As I grew up watching MTV and other independent videos during my school days, my liking to be on stage and to become a singer gradually grew. My very first playback was at the age of 11.
What’s your take on the music preference of people from the South? How different is it from Bollywood or Northern India?
Down South, we have various kinds, according to the states. Like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, etc. Every state has its own taste in music. Sometimes, it becomes a bit tricky to catch the right pulse. Whereas, on the other hand, Bollywood’s massive because of the language. Hindi is not only National but is universal, according to me.
You have sung in more than 100 films so far and that’s quite remarkable. How do you sum this journey in a line?
I work hard. But yet, if there is no luck, nothing moves. I might sound dramatic but, on a very humble note, I am blessed by my universe. Will forever be grateful.
From Allu Arjun to Ram Charan, Shruti Haasan, Kajal Aggarwal, Jr NTR, you have sung in movies of really popular South actors. Who among them is your favorite and why?
To be honest, All the above names are amazing, especially when they dance. They do justice to any given song.
Maybe, I have a little favoritism towards Kajal since I have rendered more songs for her. (Smiles)
How do you think playback singing has changed over the years with the rap culture and music videos dominating the scene?
It’s become easy. The technology has taken over a bit too much. Everything is ready-made nowadays. ‘Anybody’ can sing. All you need is one software that can tune your voice. But, that would never last long. The authenticity of Rap culture and the independent scene is picking up now again only after many years in India. I really hope the producers encourage and support the independent artists as well. Trust me. It’s an ocean of artists out there.
Last but not the least, one Bollywood actress for whom you would love to lend your voice if given an opportunity?
Deepika Padukone.
