What inspired you to write Khel, and how does it reflect your own experiences with modern dating?
When I was talking to some of my single friends, I realized how sick and tired they are of trying to find the right guy through word of mouth or dating apps. Their struggle inspired me to write this song. Khel’s concept is one that comes from secondary experiences.
The song’s lyrics touch on themes of self-empowerment and authenticity. Can you elaborate on the message you hope to convey to your listeners?
Khel is a song about a girl who is looking for an honest, true lover. She is aware of the games that men play to impress girls. She’s confident, she’s street smart and the message that she wants to convey is love is not a khel, so don’t take us for granted.
How do you think Khel will resonate with young women who are navigating the complexities of modern dating?
I feel young girls will relate to this song. In today’s day and age, people don’t have a lot of time to give to just one person. They want to explore all their options, they want to test the one they are dating, and they are not willing to compromise. Everyone is in a rush and this game of trying to find the right person is not always a fair one. Through dating apps, many women have had experiences where one party has been playing them. I feel Khel is telling that story while also giving out their message of wanting to find a true life partner they can rely on.
Your debut Punjabi single Intezaar was well-received by audiences. How does Khel build upon that success, and what do you hope to achieve with this new release?
I feel Khel is a great chaser for Intezaar. While Intezaar is a song about long-distance love, Khel takes the complicated nature of love one notch higher. The song is upbeat, energetic and powerful, giving out a strong message. I feel both these songs are perfect starters as I grow and develop my artistic journey in the Punjabi music circuit.
You’ve co-written songs for other artists, including Jacqueline Fernandez’s debut single “Stormrider.” How does your approach to songwriting differ when working on your own music versus collaborating with others?
When I am collaborating on other projects, it’s all about the brief given to me. What the artist is feeling and how they want to express their work becomes the most important factor as I am writing for someone else. It’s about honing your skills to give the artist exactly what they are looking for. When I am writing for myself, I write about themes that inspire me or experiences that have left a deep mark on my soul. I dive into topics that affect me on a deeper emotional level. It’s a very different way of writing songs and I enjoy both approaches equally.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any new projects or collaborations that you can share with us?
I have a bunch of exciting collaborations coming out next year. Lots of new music and some cool projects. I cannot share much right now but stay tuned.
How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in inspiring your music?
Instagram has been a great tool to stay in touch with folks who enjoy my music. I often get private messages on Instagram where someone has heard my song and wants to express what it made them feel. I really cherish those messages and respond to each one of them. I also enjoy playing my new releases to people I meet and getting their reactions from them.
How do you balance your creative pursuits with other aspects of your life?
Balancing personal and professional life is always challenging. I try to stick to a schedule which helps me keep part of my day free for family. I feel doing some fun things together like long walks and short trips are great stress relieves and also keep my creativity alive.
