1. At the age of three, Sonu Nigam performed on stage for the first time! At a live event, he performed his first song, Kya Hua Tera Wada, with his father.
2. Sonu is a linguist who is fluent in several regional languages. With clear diction, he can sing in Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Kannada, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, English, Bhojpuri, Urdu, Nepali, and Marathi.
3. RD Burman considered Sonu Nigam for the 1942 Love Story song Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh. Kumar Sanu was meant to perform the song, but he arrived late, enraging composer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Sonu Nigam was instructed by Pancham Da that if Kumar Sanu did not arrive within the next five minutes, he will record the song. Sonu stated that he was hoping Sanu da would not show up, but he did. And the know, as they say, is history!
4. Sonu’s first album, Kismat, released on the Magna Sound label, was a huge hit. The record was a blockbuster seller, and the company immediately followed by acquiring him for another Bhajan album, Sanskaar.
5. In 1999, Sonu got his first Filmfare award for the song Ishq Bina in Taal, which was composed by AR Rahman. For the title tune of Kal Ho Naa Ho, he got his first National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. For this Karan Johar film, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed the music.
6. Sonu’s film debut was in the 1983 film Betaab as a child actor. He made his acting debut as an adult in the 2004 film Love in Nepal, opposite Juhi Babbar. He also appeared in Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani and Kash Aap Hamare Hote, among other films.
7. In 2006, Sonu launched his radio show, Life Ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam, on Radiocity 91.1 FM, where he addressed musicians, including Lata Mangeshkar in the most recent episode.
8. In Hollywood, Nigam has done Hindi voiceovers for animated blockbusters such as Aladdin and Rio. He also performed in the Hindi remake of Aladdin, which was broadcast on Disney Channel India. Sonu was appointed to lead his voice in a Hindi dubbed version of a Japanese animated film, The Mystical Laws, which was announced in February 2013.
9. As a solo composer, Sonu Nigam composed the title theme for the film Singh Saab The Great. In partnership with drummer Bickram Ghosh, he composed the soundtrack for films such as Sooper Se Ooper and Jal.
10. It was rumoured that Sonu was working on an English album called Spirit Unfolding as well as a project called Time Travel, in which his voice would be mixed with that of other vocalists in Hindi songs. He’s also collaborated with Jay Sean on a song created by David Guetta, a well-known international house music producer. On a remix of Britney Spears’ I Wanna Go track, he teamed with her. For the track Indian Levels, he teamed with Avicii.
