The ratio of solo female songs to those delivered by male performers has always been a point of contention. Sona Mohapatra recently mentioned it in an interview with us. If you ask Shilpa Rao, another well-known singer, about the gap, she responds it all changed last year amid the pandemic. “Because no film projects have been released, we have been able to observe the transformation. Female performers and musicians are becoming increasingly popular. We’re selecting terrific stuff, and it’s working out beautifully.”

The 37-year-old, who has hit songs like Bulleya and Manmarziyaan, says that even when things weren’t going well, she stayed true to herself and never did a song just for the sake of it.

“Thankfully, I haven’t had to do that,” she says. She’s made songs that she naturally connects with, especially with folks with whom she has a strong bond. She doesn’t have a rigorous screening process, but the sole requirement is that everyone who wants to work with her, particularly if they are newcomers, bring her the music.

Rao agrees to contribute her voice to it only if she can connect with it. Apart from that, nothing else mattered to her. She constantly says that good music can come from anyone, whether they’ve written their first song or their 100th, or if they’re world-famous. In those areas, she is not prejudiced. She will do a song with a 15-year-old kid if she loves it, adds the singer, who just released her solo song Phuljhadiyon, which was featured in the film Mimi starring Kriti Sanon.
