During a recent interview with Elle UK, Joe Alwyn discussed why he chose to keep facts about his five-year relationship with Taylor Swift under wraps.
“It’s more of a response to something else,” Alwyn, 31, told the magazine.
“We live in an increasingly intrusive culture,” he continued. “Something will be stolen the more you give — and frankly, even if you don’t give.”
Since 2016, the British actor has been romantically linked to Swift, 32, who will play in the upcoming Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2017 novel “Conversations With Friends.” The couple has kept their romance off social media, off red carpets, and out of the public spotlight in general.
Swift noted in her 2020 Rolling Stone “Musicians on Musicians” cover story with Paul McCartney that maintaining anonymity has required a conscious effort from both parties.
“I have absolutely taken decisions that have made my life feel more like a real-life and less like a plot to be commented on in tabloids,” the performer stated at the time.
“Whether it’s picking where to live, who to hang out with, or when not to take a picture — the concept of privacy feels so difficult to express, but it’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy,” she concluded.
Though the “Reputation” singer has kept her romance a secret, there are signs of Alwyn in her work. Fans claimed that the “Boy Erased” actor inspired lyrics for multiple “Lover” songs, and he co-wrote songs for Swift’s “Folklore” and “Evermore” albums, which he later verified under the moniker, William Bowery.
