Fans of Nirvana are furious that Justin Bieber wore a shirt with the band’s name on it to the 2015 American Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 22.
The 21-year-old singer of “What Do You Mean?” wore a grunge shirt with torn jeans and white shoes. Fans of the rock band instantly took note and chastised him on social media.
One commenter wondered, “Does Justin Bieber even know who Nirvana is?” “I feel like if the interviewer asked him what his favorite Nirvana song was, he’d answer it smells like adolescent spirit,” another said.
Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear were among the founding members of Nirvana, which formed in 1987. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “All Apologies” are two of their biggest singles.
Meanwhile, Bieber may be more focused on his performance than the naysayers. Larry Klein, the executive producer of his new album Purpose, recently detailed what fans may anticipate from his performance. “We planned it out as though it were three independent acts of a Broadway play.” “He’s doing a medley of three songs,” he told ABC earlier this week, “each one a different portion of the stage, each one its own setting, set, and style.” “I mean, one will have dancers, while the other will not.” “One will have a band, while the other will not. It’s basically three separate aesthetics that flow seamlessly together.”
