In Los Angeles, California, on October 21, 1995, Doja Cat was born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini to actors Dumisani Dlamini and Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer. She started recording music and posting it to SoundCloud as a youngster. At 17, she earned a joint record deal with Kemosabe and RCA Records after they listened to her song, “So High.” She then released her debut E.P., “Purrr!” in 2014. Mooo!, a song included on the deluxe edition of Doja Cat’s debut album along with singles Juicy (featuring Tyga) and Tia Tamera (featuring Rico Nasty), became an internet meme after she took a break from music in 2018. Doja Cat had previously released her debut studio album, Amala, in 2018.

Doja Cat was busy at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. The singer not only hosted the program, but she also gave a performance and won the Best Collaboration prize for her work on “Kiss Me More” with Sza. Even so, Doja changed into five different outfits throughout the evening. While she made a solid first impression on the red carpet, each new appearance consistently exceeded the one before.

The 25-year-old singer started her fashion parade on the event’s red carpet in a black corset with purple draping and red, thigh-high patent tights created by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. The outfit was previously worn on the F.W. 2019 catwalk, but Doja and her stylist, Brett Alan Nelson, decided to add platform heels instead of the heeled loafer that was originally paired.

Doja debuted at the awards presentation wearing a black corseted dress and blue fingerless gloves, all of which were taken from the same Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood’s show. Doja accessorized the ensemble with a chain belt and a long, platinum blonde wig.

She performed her hit songs “Been Like This” and “Your Right” next, singing them while performing acrobatic moves in the style of Pink. Doja performed while floating over the VMA stage in a red strappy top and wide-leg leggings that matched.

The following time Doja appeared as the show’s host. It was arguably her most stunning appearance of the evening. The singer wore a structured midi dress with embellishments that encircled her face and continued up and over her head. Later in the evening, when Doja returned to the stage to win the prize for Best Collaboration for their song “Kiss Me More,” the garment had a second moment of recognition. She jokes about her attire, “I look like a worm.” “That’s awesome. I never imagined that I would accept an award while wearing worm-themed attire.”
