During his time with One Direction, Zayn Malik established himself as a powerful singer, and he has continued to demonstrate his abilities in his solo career with Mind of Mine and beyond. We wanted to highlight some of Malik’s most notable vocal performances, whether it was on a 1D track, his own, or someone else’s, as he starts on his next solo pursuits — most recently with a groovy new collaboration with PartyNextDoor.
Whatever tune Malik is singing, his voice is impassioned. He reaches a whole new level of vocal power while singing sexually charged lyrics like those in his debut solo single. On pre-Four albums like Take Me Home, Malik’s impressive moment was still quite present.
This song is a bit more catchy and radio-friendly, but Malik’s performance on The Voice (particularly when he belts out “He don’t know your body”) really highlighted his vocals. Yes, Harry Styles has a great vocal performance in this Midnight Memories song, but he’s rapidly overshadowed by Malik’s excessive-high note (which James Corden imitated admirably on 1D’s “Carpool Karaoke”) to replace Malik’s hole.
Given her status as pop music’s sweetheart, collaborating with Taylor Swift can be difficult. Swift’s whispery vocals sound great, but Malik’s dreamy falsetto takes centre stage.
