What Happened To First Generation Group Baby V.O.X, Find Out

Learn what transpired to Baby V.O.X, a first-generation band.

Without a doubt, Kpop Nation is expanding, with groups like S.E.S, H.O.T, TVXQ, Super Junior, EXO, Big Bang, Wonder Girls, Girls Generation, SHINee, Blackpink, BTS, and others leading or having led the Hallyu wave for decades.

However, many Kpop fans may have never heard of Baby VOX, despite the fact that they have been around for decades.

But we figured a little background on baby VOX couldn’t hurt!

On July 3, 1997, Baby V.O.X made their television debut with a broadcast performance of their song “To Men (Democracy).”

EQUALIZEHER, their debut album, was released on July 10th.

The business DR Entertainment put them together (name later changed to DR Music).

The Spice Girls and Korean acts like H.O.T influenced the group’s debut release, which included an attitude-filled social justice/feminist idea.

As a result, they were dubbed the “Spice Girls of Korea” and the “Female H.O.T.”

The theme, however, proved to be too powerful for the Korean people, and “To Men” was censored owing to its lyrical content.

They renamed the song “Haircut” and proceeded to promote it, but only had minimal success. EQUALIZER debuted at number 47 on the SBS Gayo Top 20 (music TV show) chart, selling around 50,000 copies.

The debut performance of Baby V.O.X was taped on July 3 and aired on July 5, 1997.

Due to health problems, member Cha Yumi was forced to quit the group and return to her home in America during the promotion of their debut album.

Kan Mi Youn took her position, and she would stay with the group for the remainder of their releases. Members Jang Hyun Jung and Jung Shi Woon quit the group during the first album’s promotion (due to internal disagreement) and were replaced by Shim Eun Jin and Jung Shi Woon.

After the marketing for the second album, Lee Gai (actual name Lee Hee Jung) quit the group. She was determined to have lied about her age, convincing DR Entertainment that she was just 20 years old when she was actually 30 years old. Throughout the previous decade, she had made many debuts under various identities and with various ensembles. A rumor circulated during the promotion of their third album that member Kan Miyoun was dating H.O.T member Moon Heejun. This sparked a surge of anti-fan sentiment directed against Baby V.O.X that lasted for years. Some of this behavior was aggressive, and members of Baby V.O.X were physically harmed as a result.

During a Baby V.O.X concert, there were multiple videos of anti-fans yelling “(“Ggeojyeora”), which means “Get lost.”
