The K-pop industry has seen quite a few successful groups come and go over the years. Sometimes an end of the contract is what sets off the disbandment, and other times it’s a different reason altogether. Check out these 5 pop groups and the reason they disbanded there.
1) GFRIEND:
This group’s news about disbanding came as quite a shock to fans in 2021, as the group was doing quite well in the industry and because their agency was still releasing the content of the group. However, the news was confirmed when the girls wrote heartfelt letters to the fans. The girls decided to promote as 5 instead, as per a Zoom TV report.
2) MissA:
The news of MissA’s disbandment came as a shock to many since they were quite a popular group. Fans had quite a few speculations about the reasons behind it as per a Zoom TV report. Two out of the 4 members, Jia, and Min’s contract ended in November 2016. There wasn’t much to do with only two members, so the group officially disbanded in December 2017.
3) 2NE1:
This girl group consisted of 4 members. They made their debut in 2009 under YG Entertainment. They were quite the popular group. Minzy departed from the group after the contract expired in April 2016, as per a Spinditty report. Their group decided to disband in November. They released their last single Goodbye on January 21, 2017.
4) I.O.I:
This girl group made its debut in 2016 with their EP Chrysalis. The 11-members however, disbanded at the end of January in 2017 as they returned to their respective agencies, as per a Spinditty report. They personally picked and released their final song, ‘Down Pour” as a farewell to their fans.
5) SISTAR:
This 4-member group debuted under Starship entertainment in 2010. As per a Zoom TV report, they disbanded in 2017 after they released their last track, Lonely. Each member posted self-written letters of farewell for their fans.
