Sunidhi Chauhan discussed her Bollywood playback singing career, as well as why it took her 20 years to release her first solo single, "Ye Ranjishein"

It’ll never be easy to choose just one Sunidhi Chauhan song as your favorite low sound. She’s been churning out chartbuster tracks for the past two decades.

Sunidhi made her Bollywood playback singing debut at the age of 12 with “Ladki Deewani Dekho” from Shastra (1996). Sunidhi has provided her voice to actors ranging from Rekha to Alia Bhatt and has sung in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati.

Sunidhi spoke up about her musical path in an exclusive interview with IndianExpress.com, including whether she has ever faced criticism for her unusual voice tone and why it took her 20 years to record her debut solo single, “Ye Ranjishein,” which was released recently.

She was so engrossed with film music that she didn’t have time to consider creating something in the independent sector. But, as a result of the lockout, she realized there’s a lot more to discover. To be honest, she hasn’t felt like doing anything non-film-related in the last 20 years. She was prepared this time. She was fortunate enough to meet the right people at the right moment. Shruti Rane’s art and composition impressed her. She’s only in her early twenties. She was also ecstatic to see a female composer. She couldn’t wait to sing it in the studio since the whole thing sounded fantastic. This is how “Ye Ranjishein” came to be.

They shot it in January when the number of Covid-19 cases was at a low point. She was leaving her son for the first time in three and a half years and going to work. That was a tremendous amount of pressure. They did two days of shooting. Their director performed an outstanding job with the planning. The video depicted a very different scene from the actual site. It was a desolate landscape with few buildings. But she was really taken aback when she saw the first cut.
