Udit Narayan (born December 1, 1955) is an Indian playback singer who is most known for his work in Hindi-language Bollywood films. He’s also sung in a variety of languages, including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Odia, Nepali, Bhojpuri, and Bengali. With a total of 20 nominations, he has received four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. He had the opportunity to sing with Mohammed Rafi in his Bollywood Playback debut in the film Unees-Bees, as well as Kishore Kumar, in the 1980s.
He made his debut with the song “Papa Kehte Hain” in the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, which earned him his first Filmfare Award in the 1980s and secured his place in Bollywood Playback Singing. In three decades, he is the first male vocalist to win a Filmfare Award (the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s).
The soundtrack became one of the best-selling albums of the 1980s after the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which sold over 8 million copies. The soundtrack became a watershed moment in the careers of Anand–Milind and T-Series, one of India’s most prestigious musical companies. Following it, he became a favorite among music directors.
He sang for hundreds of songs in the 1990s, including Hindi and Nepali. In 2001, King of Nepal Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev gave him the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu, and in 2009, he was given the Padma Shri for his service to Indian film and music, and in 2016, he was granted the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. for his contribution to Bhojpuri film, and the Chitragupta Cineyatra Samman for his contribution to Bhojpuri movie in 2015. 21 of his songs are included in BBC’s “Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks.”
