Britney Spears is a living icon in the music industry. Her 23-year reign as the Princess of Pop has solidified her place as a cultural icon, with an impact that is still felt two decades later. It almost goes without saying that she’s served some looks throughout the years. But Britney’s style has always been distinctive: whether it’s her obsession with the fedora, her passion for Juicy Couture, or her spectacular stage outfits, she symbolizes a relaxed and unpretentious attitude toward fashion.
Britney Spears became a worldwide pop sensation about whom everyone was talking. Britney courted controversy by finely treading the line between school-age innocence and knowing self-sexualization, dressed in a Kmart schoolgirl uniform with midriff exposed and hair in pigtails. The fact that she came up with the idea merely goes to show that she’s always been a creative person who knows how to play pop games. The green bralette and tiny blue shorts that showcased Britney’s agility and the steamy hot choreography were nothing compared to the previously disputed exposed midriff and schoolgirl costume.
The double denim, like so many of Britney’s most iconic fashion moments, was her idea. Costume designers Kurt and Bart devised Britney’s patchwork ensemble, while Steven Gerstein designed Justin’s denim tux. Katy Perry and Riff Raff recreated the outfit at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
