The breakthrough track “Ocean Eyes” by musician Billie Eilish brought her initial attention in 2015, and her debut studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? propelled her to success in 2019. There is no doubt that Billie is capable of much more; she is currently one of her generation’s most accomplished musicians. Critics and internet trolls, who just can’t seem to give her a break, were a challenge for the celebrity to deal with. Many of the tracks on Billie Eilish’s second studio album, Happier Than Ever, deal with reviewers, stalkers, internet trolls, and body shamers, as anyone who has listened to it can attest. There is no other way for Billie to deal with the criticism she encounters online than to put it into music; songs like “Therefore I Am” and “Happier Than Ever” are just two examples. The performer spoke candidly about how much internet animosity genuinely impacts her in an interview with i-D. According to Billie, “In my life, I’ve experienced a lot of failures.

And when so many people are staring at you and telling you that you are one, it is quite simple to feel like a failure. It may be difficult to resist their claims. I used the internet growing up. I use social media for the same reasons as everyone else, and when I see videos that tell me I’m terrible, ugly, and a failure, it makes me feel inadequate.” The singer asserted during an Up Close interview that she thinks haters are only brave when they are hiding behind a screen. Most people who post cruel comments online, in Billie Eilish’s opinion, would never confront her with such remarks in person. She said as follows: “People who even say ridiculous things don’t even expect you’ll believe them. In the real world, they wouldn’t say that to you.”

The musician confessed that she made the decision to quit dwelling too much on her detractors in an interview with the LALA Times. According to Billie, “I’m interested in hearing what others have to say, and I generally agree with what the internet has to say because I’ve spent my entire life online. They make fun of people for a lot of things, but some of those things are funny because they’re kind of true, right? This makes me anxious because I start to wonder if the negative things others are saying about me are actually true. What are they, too? I’m curious about them! However, I don’t want to know them since I don’t know what that would do for me. Nothing.”
