Cardi B’s debut album, Invasion of Privacy, has received critical and commercial acclaim less than a week after its release. She knows she’ll be here for a while, so she’s making preparations to invest in her own future.
Cardi B believes she’ll be losing money at Coachella this year after spending $300,000 of her own money on her stage set, according to a recent interview with Sirius XM. She says that the festival was scheduled for last year when she wasn’t as well-known as she is today and that the remuneration isn’t as good as it might be—but she’s fine with it.
“We booked Coachella around six to seven months ago,” she says. “So, for Coachella, I’m getting paid roughly $70,000 each day.” This has been set aside for me. Then it’s like, I’ve had to spend so much money on my stage set—my own money—that I have to write a check to Wells Fargo. It’s completely crazy. Almost $300,000.”
Cardi said she had no idea how big of a deal Coachella was at first, but she’s now willing to spend her own money to make it the most unforgettable experience possible. “It’s an investment,” she says. “That’s something you have to accept. “You’ve got to take it on the chin.” Then she made a joke about it, adding, “But, ‘Dammit,’ that’s like. When I had finished paying my taxes, of course.”
Cardi B was on a press tour this week in support of the release of her album, and she dropped by Sway in the Morning to discuss how the pressure of success has added anxiety to the recording process.
Cardi claims that the pressure has made the music feel like a job. “It has truly become a job. That bothers me. I don’t enjoy feeling obliged and underutilized at work. For example, I used to be a dancer and I was having a great time. It didn’t even seem like work at times.”
