Lata Mangeshkar born on 28 September 1939 in Indore was the eldest amongst the five siblings. She was born to Deenanath and Shevanti Mangeshkar belonging to a Maharashtrian family. Earlier their last name was Haridkar but later they changed it to Mangeshkar to identify with their hometown in Goa. Also, Lata Mangeshkar’s birth name was Hema but was changed to Lata, inspired by one of the characters from a play.
Lata Mangeshkar’s father Deenanath Mangeshkar was a well established Marathi classical singer as well as a stage actor. Young Lata didi used to act in her father’s musical plays since the age of 5. She also was taught classical singing not just by her father but also took lessons from classical music wizards like Amanat Khan, Pandit Tulsidas Sharma and Aman Ali Khan.
When Lata Mangeshkar’s father Deenanath Mangeshkar died she was 13 years old. And being the eldest in the family the responsibility fell upon her. She had to work to earn daily bread and butter for the family and so she started her career as a singer and actress in 1942 at the tender age of 13. Her first song was for the Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal but was later dropped from the movie.
The young Lata Mangeshkar carved her way up the ladder of success and made quite a name for herself in the industry. She is considered to be the legendary singer of the Bollywood music industry who has claimed hearts not just in India but internationally.
