Throwback: A true classic never goes out of style, and the tiny red cocktail dress in silk satin from Dior’s Fall 2014 collection is a prime example of this. Because a year and a half later, the adorable look is still a welcome sight on the red carpet! Selena Gomez, Lucy Hale from the television series Pretty Little Liars, and model Irina Shayk are a few of the dress’ most well-known supporters.
In October 2014, shortly after the collection was released, Selena Gomez and Lucy Hale both wore the dress to occasions in Los Angeles – Selena at the “Rudderless” premiere and Lucy at the Teen Choice Awards. Selena accessorized this beautiful look with a pair of Louboutin’s semi-sheer “Unbouts’ ‘; while these are undoubtedly a matter of taste, they are also an admirable option because they compliment the dress without drawing attention to it. Lucy, on the other hand, chose eye-catching rivet-studded sandals by Brian Atwood, which due to the thick ankle straps optically shortened the legs a bit – not exactly the best choice for Lucy, who is only 1.57 m tall.
Irina Shayk, who wore the ensemble shortly after Selena Gomez at the L’Oreal Red Obsession celebration in Paris, matched the dress with the most basic and delicate sandals she could find: ‘Colettes’ choo of Jimmy Her black and gold small box clutch, which, by the way, appeared confusingly identical to Lucy’s replica from Michael Kors, made her legs appear infinite and complemented them well. In Irina’s model form, the décolleté portion of the outfit was unfortunately the least flattering because the sides protruded noticeably and there were creases under the bustier. On the other hand, Selena and Lucy had chosen the appropriate size, Selena with the added benefit that the dress suited her so exactly that it drew an ideal décolleté.
The sleek look on Irina combined with the minimal makeup appeared far too severe, but Selena expertly softened the effect with her playful eyeliner, fresh lipstick, and earrings. Selena also had a clear advantage when it came to makeup and styling. Unfortunately, Lucy’s hairstyle—a ruffled plait—and earthy makeup—which hardly complement the dress—end up looking sloppy.
