Serena Williams was beaten ‘7-5, 6-7 (4/7) 6-1’ by Tomljanovic in the 3.5 hour battle and therefore has been sent crashing out of the US open. Earlier, while she dreamt of a different glorious finish to her sports career, the US open battle seems to have gotten it into ruins.
Williams hinted of her retirement from her sports career after the US Open, earlier this month. However, as after the match, it’s a clear stat that her career is likely to end, Williams shared some overwhelming words with the media talking about her journey.
“It’s been a fun ride,” she said. “It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on, I mean, in my life.
“I’m just so grateful to every single person that’s ever said, ‘Go, Serena,’ in their life. I’m just so grateful. You got me here.”
“It all started with my parents,” Williams said. “They deserve everything. So I’m really grateful for them.”
Williams further paid tribute to her sister who looked on from the strands. She said, “I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus, so thank you, Venus. She’s the only reason that Serena Williams ever existed,”
However, as Serena’s career seemed to be over, Tomljanovic said, “I’m feeling really sorry just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do,” she told the crowd. “What she’s done for me, for the sport of tennis, is incredible.
“I never thought I’d have a chance to play her in her last match when I remember watching her in all those finals, so this is a surreal moment for me.” as quoted by NDTV.
