Sports enthusiasts are always arguing who should be dubbed the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). LeBron James and Sue Bird, both of whom have won four championships, are unquestionably two of the best basketball players of all time. Meanwhile, Muhammad Ali has been crowned “The Greatest” in boxing. It’s impossible to compare sportsmen across sports and come up with a singular GOAT, despite the internet’s best efforts. If we had to pick someone, it would probably be a tennis legend, Serena Williams.
Serena Williams had won 23 Championship titles and four Olympic gold medals since she began competing at the age of fourteen in 1995. Williams is a great prospect, activist, entrepreneur, and source of inspiration for more than just her accomplishments. Although Williams’ star status will be notably missing in this year’s U.S. Open (she retired on August 25 due to an injury sustained at Wimbledon 2021), she is attempting to inspire women athletes in a novel way.
1. Her dominance’s longevity and consistency She’s been winning slams since she was a teenager (doubles) and into her mid-to-late-thirties.
2. When she decides to play doubles, she is virtually as powerful as she is in singles. Icon status, one of the most paid female athletes in the world with a large pop-cultural effect
3. In the open era of tennis, she has the most slams (even more than Roger Federer)
4. She could have easily won more slams if she wanted to, but the best athlete is a stretch, albeit perhaps the greatest tennis player.
