Stuart Binny, the all-rounder with the best ODI bowling stats, confirmed his retirement from first-class and international cricket on Monday. Binny, 37, started his journey with his home state of Karnataka and went on to represent India in six Tests, 14 One-Day Internationals, and three Twenty20 Internationals. Binny, whose father Roger was also an Indian cricketer, issued a statement saying, “I have chosen to retire from first-class and international cricket.” “Representing my country at the greatest international level has brought me enormous delight and pride.”
Binny had an outstanding bowling performance against Bangladesh in an ODI in Dhaka in June 2014, when he claimed six wickets for just four runs. It is still the finest bowling performance in one-day internationals. He had surpassed his countryman Anil Kumble, who had taken a six-wicket haul against the West Indies in 1993 but conceded only 12 runs.
Binny, who has 95 first-class matches under his belt, has had some success in Test cricket under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy.
He hit 78 in the second innings in his maiden Test against England in July 2014, which was his lone half-century in six Tests.
Evin Lewis struck him for five sixes in a T20 game against the West Indies in Florida, ultimately ending his international career.
He was trolled mercilessly. His father Roger was compelled to resign from the selection committee after the conflict of interest became a buzzword in Indian cricket.
Binny’s chances of a national comeback faded with Hardik Pandya’s debut as an explosive batting all-rounder, and he played a season of first-class cricket in the North East.
Binny congratulated the BCCI, his numerous teams, teammates, and coaches for their contributions to his development as a cricketer.
