It’s Silver, Making An Iconic Debut! Praveen Kumar Makes India Proud With Medal In High Jump

18-year-old Praveen was congratulated by the PM of India.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi complimented Praveen Kumar on his silver medal performance in the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 men’s high jump T44 final event. Praveen Kumar claimed the gold medal after breaking his personal best and setting a new Asian record with a high jump of 2.07 metres. Praveen Kumar was up against Jonathan Broom-Edwards of the United Kingdom for the gold medal, but he fell just short of clearing the 2.10m.

PM Modi took to Twitter to express his pride in Praveen Kumar for capturing the Silver medal in the 2018 Paralympic Games. PM Modi further stated that the medal is the outcome of the 18-year-“unparalleled old’s dedication” and “hard work.” Finally, he wished Praveen Kumar well in his upcoming ventures. With a personal best of 2.05m, the 18-year-old high jumper had made it to the men’s high jump T64 final with a lot of promise. He has been portrayed as one of the Indian contingent’s powerful contenders for a podium finish. At the 2019 Junior World para athletic championship, the young athlete almost missed out on a bronze medal. Kumar, on the other hand, set a personal best with a jump of 1.92m to finish fourth in the Junior Championships. India qualified for the Paralympic Games for the sixth time with a fourth-place result. Praveen Kumar went on to earn his first senior international gold medal earlier this year at the 12tg Fazza International World Para Athletics Grand Prix. At the event, Praveen’s top score of 2.05m set a new record. His 2.05m effort had placed him in the top three of his rivals, putting him in contention for a medal in the final event. The Asian pace leader stated at the time that he was keen to win gold in the Paralympic final in Tokyo. Praveen Kumar was born with one leg shorter than the other. The sportsman went on to reach sporting glory. In the T44 category of the High Jump, he is presently ranked third in the world.
