Lionel Messi had perhaps the best single-year performance of any player in the history of the sport in 2012. For club and country, the Argentinian scored a total of 91 goals. In the first part of the 2012-13 season, Messi was unstoppable. He scored more goals than Manchester United, PSG, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund combined. What’s more astounding is that Messi managed to score 91 goals in only 69 games this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 69 goals 2013

He started the season with 20 goals in the league, including two hat-tricks. But there was more heartache for Ronaldo and Real Madrid in the Champions League. Despite their Portuguese ace scoring six knockout-stage goals, Los Blancos were defeated in the semi-finals by Borussia Dortmund.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 63 goals 2012

His second-best year career-wise was 2012. He netted 63 goals throughout the year in various tournaments for Portugal, his country and his Real Madrid, his club both combined.

In 2014, Ronaldo enjoyed a remarkable goal-scoring season for both club and country. He had a prolific scoring record in both La Liga and the Champions League. He was also the first player to score 17 goals in a single tournament, a record that he still holds.

Lionel Messi: 60 goals 2010

In 2010, Lionel Messi had a year to remember. The Argentine scored a lot of goals, particularly in La Liga. In the second half of the 2009-10 season, Messi scored 25 goals to help his club defend their league title.
