Mary Kom is a boxing world champion. She was dubbed Queen of Boxing and Magnificent Mary after winning so many trophies. Take a peek at her incredible journey to becoming an Olympic gold medalist.
Mary Kom was born in Kangathei, Manipur, to jhum field workers Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom. Mary Kom finished her eighth and tenth grades at Moirang before moving to Imphal for her ninth and tenth grades. Unfortunately, she was unable to pass her exams. So she dropped out of school, took the NIOS exam, and graduated from Churachandpur College. Despite the fact that she was not academically gifted, she did not give up on life. Some people excel at athletics while others excel at education.
Mary Kom had always been interested in sports, but the success of Dingko Singh, an Indian boxer born in Manipur, in the 1998 Asian Games sparked her interest and inspired her to improve her boxing talents and pursue a career as a professional fighter. We all have role models who we look up to, just like Mary Kom. We are encouraged to follow in their footsteps when they achieve great things in life, and Mary Kom achieved just that. M Narjit Singh, Manipur State Boxing Coach, began her training in 2000.
Because many people believe boxing is undesirable for women, Mary Kom kept her passion and interest hidden from her family. When she won the Manipur State Boxing Championship in 2000, her family learned about her interest via a newspaper.
Mary Kom began international boxing at the age of 18, which is considered advanced by many standards. She did not, however, lose hope. “You are never too old to set another aim or dream a new dream,” C S Lewis, a famous poet, and novelist, once observed. Passion, hard work, and dedication are required for ambitions to become a reality; age is not a criterion. Mary Kom demonstrated to the world that age is just a number. Her perseverance in the sport of boxing earned her numerous medals, including a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics.
The Indian government honored her with several accolades for her contributions to sports, including the Arjuna Award in 2003, the Padma Shree in 2006, and the Padma Bhushan in 2013. Mary Kom is now happily married with two sons. Her achievements are astounding, which is why famed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to make a film about Mary Kom’s life. The film was released with PC (Priyanka Chopra) as Marie Kom as the major character. The film was well-received by both domestic and international audiences, and it received numerous awards. Thousands of children and adults were motivated by Mary Kom’s performance in this film to achieve success in any field they were interested in.
