Lasith Malinga, a Sri Lankan superstar, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Tuesday, capping an illustrious 16-year international career that began in 2004. Malinga had already retired from Test and ODI cricket (2011, 2019), and by declaring his retirement from T20 cricket, the 38-year-old had officially retired from all forms of cricket.
Malinga represented Sri Lanka in 30 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 84 T20Is, taking 546 wickets (101 in Tests, 338 in ODIs, and 107 in T20Is). Malinga, a formidable bowler famous for his terrifying yorkers, is still the highest wicket-taker in international cricket’s shortest format and the first to reach a century of wickets in T20Is.
“Today is a significant day for me because I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped and blessed me throughout my T20 career. Today I made the decision to give my T20 bowling shoes a complete break.” I’d want to express my gratitude to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and my teammates. I’d want to express my gratitude to the Mumbai Indians cricket team and its members, particularly the owners and officials, as well as the Melbourne Stars, Kent Cricket Club, Rangpur Riders, Guyana Warriors, Maratha Arabians, and Montreal Tigers. “I gained a lot of experience playing with you all. In the future, I’d like to share my knowledge with young cricketers. “In a video broadcast on social media, Lasith Malinga stated.
Malinga, widely considered as the top T20 bowler of all time, was also an IPL icon and remains the tournament’s most effective bowler, with 170 wickets in 122 appearances for the Mumbai Indians.
Malinga led the Sri Lankan T20 side to win in the 2014 World Cup and is the first bowler in international cricket history to take four wickets in four balls on two instances. Malinga is the only bowler to have taken three ODI hat-tricks and two T20I hat-tricks.
