Sania Mirza, a tennis prodigy, has announced her retirement from the sport after the 2022 season, citing the wear and tear on her body. On January 19, 2022, she made the news following her first-round loss in women’s doubles at the Australian Open. She made it plain, however, that the loss in the first round had no bearing on her decision.

Sania Mirza was born on November 15, 1986, in Mumbai, India, to Imran and Naseema Mirza. Her father was a sports journalist, while her mother was the owner of a printing business. After her birth, her family went to Hyderabad, where she and her younger sister, Anam Mirza, were nurtured. Anam is married to Mohammad Asaduddin, the son of former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin.

Mirza became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam tennis title. Since then, she has been the highest-ranked Indian woman’s player until 2013. After winning the Grand Slam in 2004, Mirza became the first woman to win the Women’s Tennis Association title. The next year, she was awarded the Arjuna Award.
