Many observers were skeptical when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opted to keep promising fast bowler Umran Malik ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. However, the Srinagar native has established his worth with outstanding results in this year’s competition.

Umran has been in excellent form recently, claiming his first five-wicket haul of the season against Gujarat Titans as batsmen struggle to cope with his blistering speed. The 22-year-old finished with a 5/25 record and a slew of awards to his name.

Umran bowled four of his five dismissals, only the third time a bowler has done so in IPL history. Lasith Malinga became the first bowler to do this for Mumbai Indians against Delhi Capitals in 2011, and Rajasthan Royals medium pacer Siddharth Trivedi became the second against Royal Challengers Bangalore the following year.

It also boasts the second-best bowling numbers of any Sunrisers Hyderabad bowler in the competition, trailing only Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvi’s brilliant stint against Punjab Kings in 2017 earned him the top rank with five wickets after giving only 18 runs in four overs.

Umran has had a fantastic season so far, with 15 wickets to his name, and is presently the second-best wicket-taker in the IPL after RR’s Yuzvendra Chahal.

After Ankit Rajpoot’s 5/15 against SRH in 2018 and Varun Chakravarthy’s 5/20 against DC in 2020, the five-wicket haul was the third greatest by an uncapped player in the IPL.

However, SRH’s five-wicket haul was unable to secure victory, as Gujarat Titans’ Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia bowled brilliantly towards the conclusion of the match to secure victory.
