Ishan Kishan distinguished himself as one of the country’s finest emerging prospects during Mumbai Indians’ (MI) title-winning season last season. With 516 runs at an outstanding average and strike rate of 57.33 and 145.76, the wicket-keeper batsman concluded the season as the competition’s fifth-highest run-scorer. The fact that the runs occurred while batting in various places added to the feat’s impressiveness, and his adaptability earned him a lot of accolades.

These performances garnered him an India call-up, and he wasted no time in making an impact on the international stage. In both his T20I and ODI debuts against England and Sri Lanka, the 23-year-old struck a half-century. These exploits have earned him a spot in India’s T20 World Cup roster of 15 players. The current IPL season, on the other hand, has been a far cry from Kishan’s great 2020 season. In both the India and UAE legs, the former India U19 skipper has battled to make a real impact with the bat. So far this season, he has only 107 runs in eight innings pitched at a dismal 13.37 ERA.

After Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) triumph over Kishan’s MI, Indian skipper Virat Kohli appeared to be concerned and was seen consoling the kid. Kohli was spotted on the ground delivering a pep talk to a visibly devastated Kishan.

In the post-match ceremony, even MI captain Rohit Sharma provided words of encouragement to Kishan. He stated “He’s a superb athlete. He had a fantastic IPL season last year. We want to support his natural game, which is why he is ranked higher than Surya. I don’t want to put the person under too much stress. He’s still very young, but he’s building a name for himself in international cricket.”

Kishan hit just nine runs before being removed by Yuzvendra Chahal as the reigning champions were defeated by RCB by 54 runs. After ten games, MI is in seventh place on the standings, with only eight points to their name. They’ll be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Abu Dhabi to face Punjab Kings.
