It’s possible that a player needs more than traditional skills to succeed in the game’s shortest format. Mitchell Marsh can serve as an excellent example of this. So far in the IPL, the Australian all-rounder has played for three different teams. Despite his ten-year career, he has only appeared in 20 games. Marsh has been overlooked by the owners on numerous occasions, yet his numbers have always been respectable. Marsh has performed admirably in the event, taking 20 wickets at an economy rate of under eight runs per over and batting at over 20. But he’s never been exceptional, and he’s now relegated to the ranks of abroad all-rounders. After four years, Sunrisers Hyderabad has offered him an IPL deal.
Punjab struggled to get off to a good start as they batted first, as spinner Rahul Sharma was in fine form. In the 16th over, Marsh became the first bowler to take a wicket, dismissing Dinesh Karthik. He then took the wicket of fellow Australian Ryan Harris not long after. Pune benefited from Marsh’s spell in their quest for victory.
Pune had a wonderful start bowling first against Mumbai Indians. Ishant Sharma bowled both openers in the fourth over. Marsh came in from the fifth over, and his first wicket was the dangerous Hardik Pandya. In the same over, he dismissed Jos Buttler, dealing the Indians a devastating blow. They were never able to recover, and the game was a full one-sided affair.
Eoin Morgan, an English hitter, was his first victim. He eventually got the better of KKR captain Gautam Gambhir later in the innings. Despite just being given two overs, Marsh was able to make a significant impression. Lakshmipathy Balaji’s spell, on the other hand, powered KKR to victory.
Hyderabad lost two wickets in the fifth over while batting first. Marsh claimed his first scalp in the sixth over, this time of Eoin Morgan. He added to his score by dismissing Moises Henriques three overs later. Marsh also only let up 14 runs in his four overs.
Shikhar Dhawan and Dwaraka Ravi Teja, batting first, gave Deccan Chargers a great start. By the seventh over, the bulls had reached 50 runs without losing a wicket. Marsh entered the picture at that point. Ravi Teja was his first wicket of the day. After that, he was silent for a while but came back to life when he died. JP Duminy, Sunny Sohal, and Amit Mishra all fell victim to Marsh’s slower deliveries and change of pace in the same over. Pune was able to limit DC to 136 runs, which they were able to comfortably chase down.
