Indian Premier League was all set to begin its 13th season on 29th March 2020. However, according to recent reports, it has been postponed to 15th April 2020. The novel Covid-19 has turned into a pandemic and spread to 90 countries. In a media release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said it is concerned and sensitive about all its stakeholders; the IPL is prioritizing public health and implementing measures to ensure the safety of all individuals’ safety, including fans, for a secure cricket experience. The IPL will be played behind closed doors, to empty stands. The order from the central sports ministry on the matter stands to prevent any mass gathering.
In such a scenario, BCCI can do two things: change the league format to fit into a smaller window and conduct the league within 2 or 3 venues to curb unnecessary travel. IPL can only be played with foreign players. Currently, the visas are in the process of being rejected for safety concerns. All in all, IPL 2020 is happening, but BCCI and Indian Health Ministry are taking the necessary measures to make it safe and exciting at the same time.
We hope things get in order soon and have a pleasant and fun IPL 2020.
