‘I Think My Body Is Wearing Down’ Says Sania Mirza

Know why Sania Mirza says her body is very down

After losing in the first round of the Australian Open women’s doubles, Sania Mirza declared her retirement from tennis. Tamara Zidansek and Kaja Juvan defeated Mirza and her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok, 35, 4-6, 6-7 in one hour and 37 minutes in extremely challenging conditions. “There are a number of reasons for this. It’s not as simple as declaring, “OK, I’m not playing. I believe my recuperation is taking longer than expected, and I’m putting my 3-year-old child at risk by traveling so much with him, which is something I need to think about.

My physical condition seems to be deteriorating. My knee was in awful agony today, and while I don’t believe that’s why we lost, I do believe that as I get older, it’s taking longer for me to recover,” she said after the match on Court 5 at Melbourne Park. “Finding the motivation to come out every day is also vital for me. The energy isn’t the same now. There are more days these days than there were previously when I don’t want to do that. I’ve always said that I’ll keep playing until I no longer love the grind, which I’m not sure I do.”

“However, I still aim to play the entire season since I’m enjoying myself. I’ve worked really hard to get back in shape, reduce weight, and attempt to offer a positive example for women, particularly new mothers, to pursue their dreams to the fullest extent possible. I don’t believe my body is capable of it after this season. It’s over.”
