As the e-auction for IPL Media Rights come to an end, reports are coming that Disney+ Hotstar has own the tv rights for the matches, while Viacom 18 has own the digital rights. However, the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement on who has won the Package A (TV rights for the Indian subcontinent only) and Package B (digital rights for the Indian subcontinent) rights.
According to reports of late, the Package A victor would offer a 5% of higher fees on rights than the Package B owners. However, if the Package A victor runs the offerings during the time given by BCCI then there will be a auction held between Package A winner and highest bidder of Package B, with each getting the chance to hike on the fees with 5%.
Back in 2017, the media rights for IPL were secured at 16,347.5 crore and therefore the company had to pay a pledge of Rs 54.5 crore per game basis. However, this year, the bidding showcased on a different parameter of per game basis and base prices for per match, that is package A and package B, and the bidding has been set on 49 crore and Rs 33 crore, respectively.
A BCCI official told The Indian Express, “We are happy with the way the day has progressed and the best part is all the bidders have shown keen interest. We are hoping that bidding reaches figures the IPL deserves. The second day will be more interesting for all stakeholders,”
It was just a few years back, Facebook was considered to be the most noteworthy bidder with Rs 3,900 crore, which added up to around Rs 13 crore for every game. However, 2022 has been a different one for the BCCI detected an open door, given the post-pandemic elevation. With comparison to the US dollars, it could be estimated that now IPL’s per-game value is at $13.43 million, after the first day bidding stands.
Talking to the Indian Express, Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI was absolutely confident that IPL would become one of the top-notches on board in terms of media rights per game, all across the world. He said, “At present, a National Football League (NFL) game costs a broadcaster about $17 million, which is the highest for any sports league. That’s followed by the English Premier League, at $11 million and the Major League Baseball figure, too, is roughly the same. In the last five-year cycle, we got $9 million from one IPL game. This time, going by the present minimum base price that we have set, BCCI will get paid $12 million per IPL match,”
Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president talking at the India Leadership Council Event, said, “I have seen the game evolve, where players like me earned a few hundreds and now have the potential of earning crores. This game is run by the fans, by the people of this country, and by the BCCI, which was formed by cricket fans. This sport is strong and will continue to evolve. The IPL generates more revenue than the English Premier League. It makes me feel happy and proud that the sport I love has evolved to become so strong.”
The BCCI has gathered a stunning Rs 44,075 crore from the offer of TV and the digital rights for the same. The per match worth of IPL has leaped to Rs 107.5 crore. The TV and digital rights have been sold for Rs 23,575 crore and Rs 20,500 crore separately. The per match an incentive for TV rights is Rs 57.5 crore while for digital it’s Rs 50 crore.
